The predictions this year have a confidence level of 70 percent: 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), with 3 to 6 of those becoming major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher).

Note that Fiona made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane and still did a lot of damage—it all boils down to levels of community preparedness on land. The impacts do not affect everyone equally.
