Depending on the product, 2021 was either the 5th, 6th or 7th warmest year, but in all cases, it is part of the string of warm years (since 2015) that have all been more than 1ºC warmer than the late 19th C. In contrast, CMIP6 model hindcasts/forecasts for this time period don’t show any cooling at all at these latitudes.

In my opinion the press conference on 9 August 2021 didn’t do justice to the vast effort that went into it. Another clue indicating a shortcoming is if you look at the atmospheric CO 2 -concentrations over time to see how much impact the IPCC reports have had on the real policy-makers in the world (Figure below).

This, astronomers believe, allowed the cloud to cool and condense into dust that blocked some of Betelgeuse’s light. The satellite revealed that the star itself cooled by 140 °C. The Himawari-8 observations also suggest that something was happening to the atmospheric structure of Betelgeuse 10 months before the dimming.
