This summer the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University will lead a campaign to map heat and air quality in Philadelphia, working with community scientists so that residents have a stronger voice in the planning and implementation of climate change-preparedness strategies. .

His “parents” were among 50 community scientists helping with the Philadelphia Urban Heat Mapping Campaign , a study in which the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He didn’t help much with navigation — he is a dog, after all.

Community scientists will map heat and air quality across the city by driving one-hour routes in the morning, afternoon and evening with heat and air quality sensors mounted to their cars. The sensors will produce detailed heat and air pollution maps that will be shared publicly to catalyze equitable solutions to these issues.
