By expanding public transportation and rail, and by planning our communities in ways that let people meet their needs with biking, walking, and shorter driving trips we can make the cleanenergy transition more achievable and affordable. In sum, the cleanenergy transition is achieved at less cost and with greater societal benefit.
Today, California took another important step in planning for the transition to cleanenergy, a step that’s been a long time coming. Starting with our Turning Down the Gas in California analysis in 2018, UCS has been pushing the CPUC to do more thoughtful, proactive planning for gas plant retirements.
Gas plants failed at a scale that jeopardized grid reliability for large regions of the United States during severe winter storms in 2011 , 2014 , 2018 , 2021 , and 2022. Although the country’s federal energy regulator has had a disconcertingly nonchalant attitude towards these events.) Unfortunately, this isn’t a rare problem.
Field and Israel were energized by the swift progress in Maine since 2018, noting, “it is possible to work towards climate resilience quickly and effectively.” The best way policy makers can do so is to seize these climate and cleanenergy opportunities.
Back in 2018, California legislators were considering a bill that would have created an independent governance structure for California’s grid operator , the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). The 2018 bill did not pass, but the idea never faded. The list goes on, but you get the point.
Energy storage, or the storing of electricity for later use on the power grid, plays an important role in the cleanenergy transition. Illinois is currently considering policy proposals to establish a statewide energy storage target. Illinois needs policies in place now to jump-start development for our 2030 needs.
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) and Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced that proposed amendments to the state’s CleanEnergy Standard (CES) were finalized earlier this month without substantive changes from draft language initially proposed by the agencies in April 2022.
The state’s grid reliability is also inextricably linked to issues of improving energy affordability and achieving California’s ambitious cleanenergy goals. It gained traction in California in 2018, although that particular effort fell short. This is the step that tripped up the 2018 grid regionalization push.
The United States supports Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) partners in meeting their cleanenergy goals. Over the last two decades, energy demand in Southeast Asia increased by an average of 3% annually, according to the International Energy Agency’s Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2022.
An ambitious law that promises to accelerate the state’s cleanenergy transition, CEJA provides a detailed framework for greater utility transparency and accountability to update electricity distribution infrastructure to ensure a cleanenergy future. Illinois utilities contributed to that trend.
The combination of offshore wind turbines, floating solar panels and green hydrogen are some of the hybrid cleanenergy technologies currently under development off the Dutch coast. . The low-lying European country is using its expertise in water engineering to build up its next wave of cleanenergy infrastructure.
These models are essentially designed to determine what resources need to be added to the grid to meet certain goals, such as cleanenergy or emissions reduction goals. Capacity expansion modeling helps determine how many clean resources, such as solar and wind, need to be added to the grid to meet cleanenergy goals.
For anyone who isn’t an energy expert this can make substantive participation in the process difficult, if not impossible. That’s a problem – not just for energy cost and reliability but for the future of the cleanenergy transition. That’s a concern because important energy decisions are made at the CPUC.
Douglas White, a long-serving member of Lower Providence’s Environmental Advisory Council , which had pushed for the cleanenergy resolution, agreed. Fully half of Montgomery County's population lives in communities committed to a fossil-fuel-free future. This is a collaborative, iterative process.
You can read their insights from their experiences—including being denied the opportunity to take the floor—and their efforts to engage with Dr. Avery in 2017 , 2018 , and 2019. 1 capturing three seats on the board by successfully arguing that ExxonMobil was failing to adapt for the transition to cleanenergy.
Africa sits atop an enviable wealth of minerals crucial for the worlds cleanenergy transition. By Femi Akinrebiyo Africa sits atop an enviable wealth of minerals crucial for the worlds cleanenergy transition. The moment is ripe for Africa to seize its role as a vital player in the global cleanenergy revolution.
Going back in the compliance history of Nancy 13, a DEP inspection report dated December 20, 2018 noted the well was leaking brine, gas was venting from the well casing and the value used for fracking the well was still on the wellhead, but no violations were listed. It’s the same water-use target that Cape Town established during its Day Zero water crisis in 2018. Though the project would cut through 53 miles of forest in western Maine, most of the electricity would be destined for Massachusetts, in order to fulfill that state’s cleanenergy standard.
Economies of scale also come into play: for residential systems, LBNL found that an 8-to-9 kilowatt system in 2018 was on average 13 percent cheaper per watt than a 4-to-5 kilowatt one. But the happenings in the residential, commercial, and institutional market segments are really important for our vital move to cleanenergy.
This reduction in EV emissions has come largely from the increased use of cleanenergy sources like wind and solar and the marked reduction in coal-fired power generation.
Although its track record has some complexities, this timeline of German actions shows just its early and sustained attention to cleanenergy policy: 1990. It has helped to shape EU climate policy, while at the same time its own policies were shaped by the EU’s. trillion tons.] Renewables are a third of electricity consumption.
In order for states in PJM to take full advantage of incentives under the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), PJM must remove barriers to meeting the market and policy demand for cheap and cleanenergy. For context, there were 200 GW of cleanenergy resources operating in the entire U.S. Read more here.]
Since 2018, Alberta has had legislation which supports PACE programming via the CleanEnergy Improvements Regulation (CEIP Regulation) and amendments to the Municipal Government Act (MGA).[1] 1] The amendments to the.

And, this spring, that cleanenergy production is looking more impressive than ever. The United States now has more than 73,000 utility-scale wind turbines in service, 26 percent more than it did in 2018. In 2023, for example, taken together, they accounted for two thirds of the total new megawatts installed.
