Fracking in Washington County began in the mid-2000s when advancements in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technology and horizontal drilling unlocked vast reserves of naturalgas in the Marcellus Shale formation. However, the rapid expansion of fracking in Washington County came with significant environmental and health concerns.
Here are j ust a few examples of the penalties imposed by DEP against Big Shale Gas and related industries include-- -- $939,553 penalty against Chevron related to fatal gas well fire in Greene County; -- $1.1 billion cubic feet of naturalgas from the Rager Mountain Gas Storage area in Cambria County; -- $1.1
Because, as early as 2010, and I know that the onset of shale gas activities in Pennsylvania started before that, but really, my involvement started in 2010. And, at that time, I was witness to Pennsylvania community residents expressing concern about their health and their proximity to shale gas operations.
Coal plants are being kept online or converted to gas facilities specifically to meet this growing demand. In October 2024, BP’s CEO Murray Auchincloss explicitly cited tech “hyperscalers” as driving demand for naturalgas, describing AI as “a major boon for the fossil fuel industry.”
On June 20, Protect PT announced it will appeal a June 3 Environmental Hearing Board decision to allow CNX Resources (formerly Apex Energy LLC) to drill two shale gas wells just hundreds of feet from homes in Penn Township, Westmoreland County. However, it turned out this was not a roundtable discussion about environmental issues at all, but a rally to promote the economic benefits of naturalgas drilling within the Delaware River watershed. That, it werent for the ban, there is enough naturalgas in the Marcellus Shale under their feet to make landowners a lot of money.
Naturalgas, oil, and nuclear are minor players. It was only in 2010 that India agreed that all countries should take responsibility for controlling their own emissions, but there was backsliding the following year at the next round of international negotiations. India then became more firmly committed to climate policy.
Regulation may have made a difference, since coal requires more extensive pollution controls than competing fuels. Since around 2008, naturalgas use has been the mirror image of coal use. Gas had long been more expensive and more volatile in price than coal. In 2010, U.S. Another key factor is often overlooked.
Shale gas emissions reporting was an initiative of the Corbett Administration. In 2022, these facilities self-reported 13,432,713 tons of airpollution-- 47.93% came from mid-stream pipeline facilities; 30.18% from unconventional shale gas wells and 21.81% from main line naturalgas compressor stations.
By Cat (Cathy) Lodge, Washington County Resident My family’s home is in Washington County and we have more Marcellus and Utica Shale naturalgas industrial facilities than any other county in Pennsylvania. Counties across the state have witnessed harm from the heavy industrial activity associated with naturalgas exploration.
“The lottery ticket for us is the recreation economy-- it’s bigger than gas, it’s bigger than a lot of other industries combined and it helps attract young people to live, work and play in Pennsylvania and helps retain and bring people back," said Acting Secretary Dunn.

So when this industry and its drilling took off in the late otss, you know, 2009, 2010, we were sort of in the right place at the right time. We find in our studies that as somebody's value of their unconventional naturalgas development activity metric goes up, the risk or severity of the health outcome goes up.

Both the United States and the European Union electricity generations have 25-30% coal (historically much higher, hence its title of King), naturalgas 35%, nuclear 20-25% and renewables make up 15% on both markets. A 2010 US study showed that stopping burning coal could be done by 2030 with renewables and energy efficiency.
These higher costs are being driven by a major overreliance on naturalgas, which has sharply spiked in price and is currently the dominant fuel source in the US for both home heating and electricity generation. See my colleague Mike Jacobs’ recent blog for more on LNG exports.) .
