To build a clean economy and avoid a climate disaster, Canada needs an emissions-free electricity supply. As we electrify everything, from our cars to our home heating systems, we need electricity to come from sources that dont emit greenhouse gases. The Clean ElectricityRegulations are an important part of Canadas climate plan.
From cars and trucks to buses and trains, electric vehicles are playing an increasingly vital role in decarbonizing mobility and reducing oil dependence However, this transition brings with it a significant challenge: the immense pressure on battery supply chains.
This tells us which fleets are deploying electric vehicles, which types of these vehicles are being deployed, and where. percent in 2023) , the growth is impressive. In 2023, electric cargo vans represented over seven percent of new registrations nationally for this vehicle type.
The future of cars is electric. However, over the last month several automakers have said the transition from gasoline to electric vehicles (EVs) will need to slow down, in part citing demand. Data through the end of September 2023 shows that the EV fraction of US car sales is continuing to rise. Are EV sales actually slowing?
I recently had the chance to visit the Los Angeles Auto Show and I was amazed at the number of electric vehicle (EV) offerings. Electric pickup trucks like this Ford F-150 Lightning have much lower global warming emissions than comparable gasoline trucks, even when accounting for electricity generation and manufacturing emissions. .
Since the beginning of 2022, electric vehicle sales in the United States have been downright electrifying. Last year, US drivers bought more than 800,000 new electric vehicles (EVs), 65 percent more than in 2021, even as overall car sales declined. Those 807,956 EVs accounted for 5.8 percent of all new cars sold, an increase from 3.1
But to understand this incredibly complex system (like the web of regulations across regions, states, and utilities, or the ways that some systems can provide overlapping benefits), we’ve got to zoom out a bit first. Generation consists of large, centralized power plants that produce electric energy. Source: Lee Shaver/UCS.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently developing a regulation to reduce climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from trucks, known as the Phase 3 GHG standards, which would in theory result in increased adoption of electric trucks. Adapted from Table A2 in ICCT’s January 2023 study mentioned above.
Last spring, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) , which operates the electricity grid serving 45 million people across the central United States, found o ut it was at a higher risk of power outages than it believed. The result, as I explain below, was skyrocketing electricity bills for thousands of people.
Now that I have reached the extent of my white-water rafting knowledge, here is a recap of our very productive session: Electric vehicle directionality stalled but will return UCS co-sponsored Senator Nancy Skinner’s Senate Bill 233 (SB 233) which would have required all electric vehicles to be bidirectional by 2030.
On January 28, the Department of Environmental Protection said compliance with a 2022 state Air Quality regulation to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas facilities was put on hold for the conventional oil and gas industry as a result of an agreement to stay a legal challenge to the regulations in Commonwealth Court.
More efficient (and cleaner) gasoline cars are part of the reason why gasoline use is down, but the increasing number of electric vehicles being sold in the state will likely drive gasoline use down even further. These regulations (both state and federal) that UCS has advocated for have saved drivers money and reduced emissions.
It’s immediately clear how fully-electric battery electric vehicles (BEVs) can help reduce emissions; eliminating gasoline and tailpipes in favor of increasingly clean electricity helps limit both climate change and air pollution. Plug-in hybrids are a bit more complicated. BEV or PHEV?
Sales of new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in California hit new highs in the first quarter of 2023. More than 16 percent of new cars sold this year are fully electric plug-ins. In the first three months of 2023, more than 30% of all new car sales were ZEVs in Alameda, Santa Clara, Marin, and San Mateo counties.
The figure below shows how the installed cost of residential solar PV systems has been falling steadily since 2001, while the price of residential electricity has been rising steadily. Meanwhile, the US Energy Information Agency predicts that electricity costs from the grid will continue rising with inflation. Make this plot yourself.
How would that change if I hopped on the electric bus route at the end of my block? Even when accounting for pollution from electricity generation, electric trucks can significantly reduce air pollution and get us on a better track to addressing climate change.
EPA Reconsidering This Regulation On March 12, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced it is reconsidering this entire regulation-- Reducing Emissions of Methane and Other Pollution from Oil and Natural Gas Operations (40 CFR Part 60, Subparts OOOOb and OOOOc). tons of VOCs in 2023. While municipalities may have some flexibility in how they zone or regulate oil and gas operations – provided they do not exceed limitations in state or federal law – doing so in an unreasonable manner which prevents future natural gas development should render the municipality ineligible for state collected and distributed impact fees.
In the electric utility industry, this conflict is on display in the debate over who makes decisions on new electric transmission and how to include policies set by state laws. They have since split this into two efforts and have issued two packages of rule changes: Order 2023 and Order 1920.
2023 was a milestone year for electric car sales in the US. Sales figure from Atlas EV Hub In California, nearly half a million EVs were purchased in 2023 reaching a whopping one in four new vehicles. But it shouldn’t be surprising that the transition to electric vehicles might not be a straight line up, up and up.
As electric vehicle charging stations sprout like mushrooms along our roads and clusters of new wind turbines come online, these two clean energy solutions to the climate crisis are becoming more commonplace. But beyond more electric cars and solar panels, what can everyday people do?
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is considering amendments to its Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) regulation, but indicated they have no plans to address the problems caused by counter-productive subsidies for manure biomethane. California’s transportation fuel policy is knee deep in cow poop, and it’s not a good look.

I work in the electric utility sector, specifically on the grid issues that shape our energy supply choices. I heard some early warnings of data center growth running into grid limits first from tech companies and then from electric utility planners. This growth is a jolt to the usually slow-moving electricity sector.
The amendments are intended to accelerate progress towards decarbonization of the electricity sector and further ensure the state meets its goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The CES, first enacted in 2017, requires retail sellers of electricity in Massachusetts to provide increasing quantities of clean electricity over time.
Expect Much Less Community Support In June, the Ind ependent Fiscal Office issued a report on the latest projections of revenue from the Act 13 Shale Gas Drilling Impact Fee showing a drop in calendar 2023 revenue to $179.1 In 2023, DEP received just over 663 shale gas permit applications. For electrolytically produced hydrogen, where electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, that means requiring proof that the electricity used to power an electrolyzer is carbon-free, as well as that use of that electricity does not inadvertently cause increases in emissions elsewhere on the electric grid.
Many of the key research studies on wastewater done by Penn State through the end of 2023 were included in this review. DEP has tried for decades to regulate this practice but failed because the conventional industry simply does not comply. So there's not a whole lot of difference. Read more here.] Forest Service. electricity generation. Renewables are continuing to increase their share of the power sector, rising to almost 23 percent of the nation’s electricity supply last year, which was higher than the generation from both coal-fired and nuclear plants. In other words, when the air is hot, gas power plants cannot generate as much electricity.
This response should include an incident report, a timeline, the regulation substance involved, where the spill or release occur, the environmental media affected, any impacts to water supplies, buildings, or utilities, and interim actions planned, initiated, or completed. DEP also detected natural gas and crude oil odors at the site.
An ambitious law that promises to accelerate the state’s clean energy transition, CEJA provides a detailed framework for greater utility transparency and accountability to update electricity distribution infrastructure to ensure a clean energy future.
