Dept. Of Health Distributing Free Potassium Iodide Tablets Near State's 4 Active Nuclear Power Plants Sept. 9 & 16

On September 7, the Department of Health announced it will offer free potassium iodide, or KI, tablets on Thursday, September 9 and 16, to Pennsylvanians who are within 10 miles of the state’s four active nuclear power plants. The state’s five nuclear facilities are closely regulated, secure and well-maintained.

In 2021, DEP reported 236,150 cubic feet of TENORM (Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) was sent to LLRW facilities for disposal, while all other industries combined in the four state compact sent 46,546 cubic feet of traditionally defined low-level radioactive waste. That amount is down from the 236,150 cubic feet of TENORM (Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) sent in 2021. In 2022, DEP reported Pennsylvania generators of low-level radioactive waste-- primarily nuclear power plants-- sent 48,241 cubic feet of LLRW waste to out-of-state waste facilities for disposal.
