The legislation committed nearly $400 billion to support, among other things, wind and solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies that will make a significant dent in US heat-trapping emissions. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossil fuels.

The biggest takeaway : without robust new policies, US energy sector heat trapping emissions will continue to remain high, far off-track from where we need to be to meet our climate goals. CO 2 emissions remain mostly level through 2050—nowhere close to meeting US climate goals. Carbon emissions remain high.

In 2021, the fund was in jeopardy due to declining hydropower generation. The fund balance was cut in half , dropping from $146 million in January 2021 to $74 million by the end of the year. However, losing a carbon-free source like hydropower means that, all else being equal, the average carbon emissions for electricity goes up.

All told, they represent 56 percent of the US population, generate 62 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, and are responsible for 43 percent of the country’s annual carbon emissions. It also creates opportunities in component manufacturing, sales, financing and maintenance for a range of renewable energy technologies.
