The fuel, commonly known as natural gas, now powers the biggest portion of US electricity generation—more than 40 percent. It has also grown to be the largest source of carbon pollution from the US power sector, even as zero-carbon renewableenergy has been growing by leaps and bounds.
Union of Concerned Scientists’ (UCS) research shows that top fossilfuel producers’ emissions are responsible for as much as half of global surface temperature increase. The best solution: Replace fossilfuels with renewableenergy. The transition to 100-percent renewables is possible.
And how would that approach compare to using renewableenergy? Some fossilfuel industry proponents have pitched coupling carbon capture and storage (CCS) with the methane reforming process to limit the resulting carbon pollution. While the answers can get a little numbers-heavy, they can be really illuminating.
The majority 6–3 decision sharply curtails the EPA’s authority to set standards based on a broad range of flexible options to cut carbon emissions from the power sector—options such as replacing polluting fossilfuels with cheap and widely available wind and solar power coupled with battery storage.
Community solar would allow thousands of Pennsylvanians, like me in the Lehigh Valley, and across the Commonwealth who do not have the property to handle solar panels to receive the benefits of clean energy, said Rep. Solar panels do not emit carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogenoxides, or other harmful air pollutants when theyre working.
In the coming years, Californians will begin to see a massive switch away from highly polluting fossil-fueled trucks to zero-emission electric trucks. Additionally, the rule phases out the sale of fossil-fueled trucks in 2036. The rule will apply to commercial, federal, state, municipal, and drayage fleets.
One is a subsidy to Enbridge—a fossilfuel giant—to build a fossilfuel power plant. Instead, it will lock in polluting fossilfuel infrastructure for decades. Enbridge promises to blend some hydrogen with natural gas, but that’s just a dangerous distraction.
Today’s announcement demonstrates a shared commitment between the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and our local communities and businesses to improve air quality, address climate change, and increase the use of renewableenergy across the Commonwealth.” Click Here for a list of projects funded. “We
Tapping into that renewableenergy is made easier along most of the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico by the fact that the water depth is relatively shallow for tens of miles from shore, meaning that the support structures for each turbine can be placed directly on the seabed.
A transition to renewableenergy is not just one of the most consequential tools at our fingertips to act on climate, but also represents a great opportunity to increase control over our energy choices, improve the health of our communities and the planet, create jobs and wealth, and much more. by 2035 is needed.
Costly and Inequitable In addition to emitting greenhouse gases, gas power plants also pollute the air with nitrogenoxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds. Now is the time for Wisconsin and the PSCW to tell We Energies that profits cannot be placed over communities.
It’s not just the poor air quality, long lines, and excessive fossilfuel company representation ; nations are still too far apart in their positions on a fossilfuel phaseout, the top priority for this COP. Yet global fossilfuel production and use continue to expand. Particulate matter (PM2.5)
Nearly all of the alliance members have a renewable electricity standard (RES), which requires utilities in their jurisdiction to increase their use of renewableenergy to a particular percentage by a specific year. We found that states have technically feasible and highly beneficial ways to achieve 100-percent renewableenergy.
Renewable projects can experience delays due to the country’s antiquated (and slow) system of connecting to the grid, as well as other reasons like permitting and transmission constraints. And fossilfuel power plants may not stick to their retirement schedules for a variety of reasons. A bit more on those reasons later.
The IRA will stimulate most of the near-term private investment in clean energy and related infrastructure to decarbonize the US economy, spurring more than a trillion dollars in capital investments through 2035. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossilfuels. Your thoughts?
That means it includes the extreme wildfires exacerbated by the fossilfuel industry that burned more than 4% of California in 2021 and 2022. come from burning fossilfuels and pesticide use, and ultrafine particles (PM0.1) These particles are categorized by size.
In New England, the percent of people of color living near fossilfuel power plants is up to 23.5 Dominion Energy is pushing to build the largest gas peaker plant in Virginia in an area where 44% of the residents are people of color and 25% are low income. Most notable of these polluting emissions are nitrogenoxides (NOx).
As we now know, fossilfuel companies lied about it for decades to protect their profits. Now that there is a desperate need to slash global warming emissions worldwide to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, it is critical to rapidly phase out the use of all fossilfuels. What accounts for that?
Concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere have risen approximately 47 percent since 1750, mostly from the burning of fossilfuels for energy. Strategies for capturing carbon from fossilfuel power plants, to prevent it from entering the atmosphere, have long lingered on the sidelines. from 1990–2019.
Environmental Protection Agency methodologies to assign a dollar value to each ton of nitrogenoxide and sulfur dioxide reduced. PJM said the new generation capacity includes almost all investor-driven renewableenergy and storage-- 50.8% billion in NOx and $445.1 billion - $1.02 solar+storage, 12.7% storage and 6.1%
Hydrogen’s supply-side has been buttressed by incentives from state and federal governments, refineries and utilities looking to extend the life of fossilfuel infrastructure, and renewableenergy companies seeking to take advantage of the huge amounts of clean energy needed to produce green hydrogen.
The fossilfuel industry has systematically contaminated our environment with a wide range of toxic chemicals for over a century. Examples are benzene, hydrofluoric acid, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogenoxides, and many, many other toxic pollutants. Refining uses many risky industrial processes.
New UCS study shows how we can accelerate US clean energy ambition An interdisciplinary team of UCS experts set out to explore how the US can meet its goals to cut heat-trapping emissions 50%-52% below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions no later than 2050. Coal is phased out of the power sector by 2030. The reductions in PM2.5
Here, we still want to cut global warming emissions by replacing polluting cars with clean vehicles and ramping up renewableenergy to phase out fossilfuel powerplants. Electricity for all (of the Western United States) California has always led in creating and achieving necessarily ambitious renewableenergy goals.
In our current fossil-fueled freight system, the cost for convenience spans far beyond membership fees for expedited deliveries. Exposure to pollution from heavy-duty vehicles results in thousands of premature deaths and nearly $100 billion in monetized negative health impacts each year, according to UCS modeling.
For example, recent attention has focused on tightening the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone smog, which is formed by atmospheric reactions on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogenoxides (NOx). Counting the "indirect" GHG benefits of regulations necessary to reduce NOx may justify greater stringency.
