2022 updates to the temperature records

Another January, another annual data point. As in years past , the annual rollout of the GISTEMP, NOAA, HadCRUT and Berkeley Earth analyses of the surface temperature record have brought forth many stories about the long term trends and specific events of 2022 – mostly focused on the impacts of the (ongoing) La Niña event and the litany of weather extremes (UK and elsewhere having record years, intense rainfall and flooding, Hurricane Ian, etc. etc.).

On January 12, Patrick Webb, Acting Director of DEP’s Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, told the Mining and Reclamation Advisory Board DEP has 47 mine reclamation projects covering 977 acres in active construction at a cost of $123 million. Webb said an additional 70 coal mine reclamation projects are in the queue covering 1,400 acres costing an estimated $106 million.

From January 7 through 13, DEP’s Compliance Reporting Database shows oil and gas inspectors filed 551 inspection reports that resulted in reporting 51 violations of environmental regulations-- 31 violations by the conventional oil and gas industry and 20 violations by the unconventional shale natural gas industry. So far this year-- as of January 6 -- DEP issued 45 formal notices of violation to conventional operators and 23 to unconventional shale gas operators.
