In December, DEP released its first-ever compliance report on conventional oil and gas operations which found DEP issued notices of violation for abandoning without plugging 2,246 conventional wells between 2017 and 2021-- an average of around 561 wells a year-- give or take. On May 25, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $14,232,308 is going to Pennsylvania from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expedite the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in Pennsylvania while advancing environmental justice. EPA selected 18 communities in Pennsylvania to receive grants totaling more than $13.5 million in competitive EPA Brownfields funding through the Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (MARC) Grant programs.
Only one CCS bill remains active and it moves closer to becoming law. Six of the nine House CCS bills were effectively killed in the House Natural Resources Committee. The two other CCS bills were voted down on the House floor. Those eight House bills could have effectively stopped most CCS projects around the state, particularly the CCS bill which sought to remove eminent domain authority from CCS projects.
