Last week, I joined my colleagues at COP28 in Dubai , as negotiators and civil society push for a fossil fuel phaseout to meet climate goals. They are useful tools for incentivizing things that we want more of – like renewable energy. That’s what the proposed clean energy tax credit does. Hydrogen, like electricity, is an energy carrier – it can be used to store and deliver usable energy, for example to a cement or steel factory or to produce fertilizer.

Our national overreliance on gas is evidently undermining energy access, not strengthening it, as some fossil fuel industry players would want you to believe. Likewise, pipeline giant Williams Companies now refers to its gas projects as “clean energy” projects. Don’t believe the industry spin.

One is a subsidy to Enbridge—a fossil fuel giant—to build a fossil fuel power plant. Instead, it will lock in polluting fossil fuel infrastructure for decades. Enbridge promises to blend some hydrogen with natural gas, but that’s just a dangerous distraction.
