Elder Vogel (R-Beaver) at the March 22 Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on DEP’s budget request , the Department of Environmental Protection said it is projecting a $1,581,000 deficit in funding for the Oil and Gas Regulation Program. In calendar year 2022, DEP received 731 unconventional shale gas permits.

On July 22, the Governor’s Office published an update to the Regulatory Agenda of regulations in development that included a new annual permit fee for unconventional shale gas operations and a schedule for the release of updated waste and other environmental standards for conventional oil and gas drilling. On March 16, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission approved proposed water withdrawals, including six natural gas drilling water use renewals totaling 7.1 The natural gas drilling water withdrawal renewals were-- -- Repsol Oil & Gas USA, LLC ( Fall Brook), Ward Township, Tioga County , PA.

On September 5, 2023, DEP issued a notice of violation to the operator for abandoning the well without plugging it and the operator tried to plug it, but a camera inserted into the well found natural gas was still bubbling up through the well indicating it had failed. No violations were issued.
