The State of RenewableEnergy 2025 documents the growth of six key clean energy technologies across the United States over the past decade and ranks states accordingly for solar power, wind power, battery storage, energy efficiency, electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging stations.
Data on the major carbon producers’ emissions have been published since 2014. The best solution: Replace fossil fuels with renewableenergy. The transition to 100-percent renewables is possible. Renewables are a readily available solution. The same solutions will fix the energy crisis and the climate crisis.
Flickr: NaturalGas Plant. As Senior Fellow Amy Turner documented last year , a number of local governments around the country have moved to prohibit naturalgas hookups in buildings. However, some state governments have blocked those local measures, preventing municipalities from enacting naturalgas bans.
The same scenario has played out with the power plants that use fossil fuels, predominantly methane (“natural”) gas, delivered by pipelines. The electric power system is trapped by gas-dependent power plants that cannot obtain gas when it needs it to keep the lights on. The problems of relying on gas are now evident.
On May 1, the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee was told the wholesale prices of electricity in the PJM regional electric grid are too low to support coal and naturalgas power plants. Replacing 1 MW of gas, nuclear or coal takes about 6 to 7 MW of solar and onshore wind from a reliability perspective.
Energy Information Administration (EIA)-- -- NaturalGas: Pennsylvania’s marketed naturalgas production, primarily from the Marcellus Shale, reached a record 7.6 Yaw did not mention renewableenergy in this announcement.] Yaw believes renewables are a problem and not an opportunity.
The Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee will hold its second hearing May 1 on electric grid reliability and the failure of naturalgas and other generation to provide power when called on by PJM during Winter Storm Elliot in December. Read more here.
On August 23, the PJM Interconnection Critical Issue Fast Path Resource Adequacy stakeholder group heard testimony and suggestions on the issue of making electricity market changes to address nonperformance of naturalgas and other generators during emergencies and events like Winter Storm Elliot in December. Read more here.
Energy prices have been much in the news over the past several months, occupying a prominent place in mainstream discussions of inflation. One columnist from the Wall Street Journal asserted just before the Glasgow climate summit that it was time to ask “ some big boy questions ” about our rush to renewableenergy.
Energy Information Administration reported-- in our January Short-Term Energy Outlook , we forecast that rising electricity generation from renewableenergy resources such as solar and wind will reduce generation from fossil fuel-fired power plants over the next two years. The forecast share of generation for U.S.
CCS is a multi-billion dollar boondoggle that doesn’t come close to the hype, has significant safety risks, and is a substantial distraction from real climate solutions, such as building more renewableenergy, increasing electricity transmission infrastructure, and developing and using storage technology. Want proof?
By Anders Lorenzen The renewableenergy sector experienced record growth in 2022 of 1%. They still account for 82% of the global energy supply according to the industry’s Statistical Review of World Energy released this week. to its highest level since 2014. Overall gas production remained stable.
However, specialists are calling for a broader restructuring of entrenched economic and energy models, which depend largely on the exploitation of fossil fuels – primarily naturalgas – as well as the distribution of the resources derived from their sale, and the subsidised supply of hydrocarbons to the domestic market.
and carries up to 540,000 barrels worth of oil and naturalgas liquids per day from Superior, Wisconsin, to Sarnia, Ontario. In fact, it wasn’t even Enbridge that detected the spill — a local utility man who smelled gas did. It has leaked 33 times since 1953 spilling at least 4.5 That’s an average of 91 spills and 2.5
As oil and gas prices fell, the company was dragged down by its “money pit” investment. billion) over the three years 2014–16. Coal-chemical plants, for example, could switch to using hydrogen from renewableenergy for producing chemicals such as methanol and alkenes. billion yuan (US$1.7
As a US territory, the island is really behind with the mainland on its energy transition with renewables barely covering 2.4 The CIA World Factbook gives slightly different numbers with renewables having a 3.6 Naturalgas covers a third and coal one sixth.) percent of consumption. ( percent share.).
Renewableenergy sources and electric vehicles are progressing so fast around the world that according to a new study coal and oil use could peak worldwide in as little as three years. To put these figures in context, the recent 2014-15 oil price collapse was the result of a two mbd (2%) shift in the supply-demand balance.
These days if you read renewableenergy news, everything is shining for solar photovoltaic: it is fast becoming the cheapest energy source, technology is getting better every year and it is wildly successful from the US to Asia, from Europe to Africa.
Years ago the Big Apple made headlines for having its famous Empire State Building undergo a $20 million retrofit that enabled a 40 percent energy consumption reduction. The average American uses 10 percent less energy than in 2007, and the nation’s energy consumption per unit of GDP has fallen by 14 percent.
When Rhoads Industries Inc.acquired Building 57 in 2014, it required substantial rehabilitation to become a state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing facility. The energy efficiency renovations of A & B Bays of Building 57 is being financed with private capital from CCG PACE Funding , enabled by the City of Philadelphia’s C-PACE program.
But, as we’ll see below, a new investigation led by a Mr Enrico Mariutti suggests that the number is closer to between 600 and 1200 gCO2/kWh, depending on the energy mix used to power PV production. kgCO2e/Kg despite an admitted 70 percent dependence on coal-fired energy. To compare, the IEA scores solar between 0.5
PURPA requires electric utilities to purchase energy and capacity from qualifying renewableenergy facilities (“QFs”). For the proxy plant method, the avoided energy cost proxy is a naturalgas combined cycle unit (“NGCC”), and the avoided capacity cost proxy is a naturalgas combustion turbine unit (“NGCT”).
In 2014, UPMC joined the Green Building Alliance 2030 challenge and has reduced its carbon footprint by over 10% in the Pittsburgh area, despite significant growth. 25 PA Lake Erie Forum Webinar On Climate Hazard Mitigation & Climate Migration [PaEN] -- Natural Areas Assn. 13 [PaEN] -- PA Sea Grant, DEP Host Oct.
A small town generating its own power, a city school equipping its rooftop with solar panels, and a company building solar water heaters that help to cut energy bills: small-scale initiatives across Argentina are showing the active role people can play in building a renewableenergy-powered future.

Key Takeaways Here are some key takeaways from the hearing-- -- NaturalGas Continues To Have A Reliability Problem: 70% of the PJM electric generation that failed to perform during the December freeze were naturalgas-fired power plants. The Commission is continuing to work with PJM to evaluate the results of the storm.
The FERC-NERC review of the 2021 outages found 81 percent of freeze-related plant outages occurred at temperatures warmer than the plants were designed to meet and 87 percent of outages due to fuel issues were tied to naturalgas. Similar extreme cold weather caused grid emergencies in 2011, 2014, 2018, and again in 2022.
4] Meanwhile, many experts see in recent trends an inevitable transition away from coal and nuclear power plants, designed to function as baseload capacity, toward variable renewableenergy sources with just-in-time naturalgas back-up. California significantly expanded its use of renewableenergy starting in 2011.
Another interesting portion of the opinion addresses CEQA’s sometimes overlooked or underappreciated mandatory energy consumption impacts analysis, and its requirement to discuss a project’s potential increased use of renewableenergy sources as relevant in determining both the significance of, and potential mitigation for, impacts in this area.
Renewables now account for 44% of the EU electricity mix and wind power is now producing more electricity than naturalgas. At the beginning of the year Spain, Germany and the Netherlands announced that they generated 50 % of their electricity from renewables in 2023. Netherlands has another success story for renewables.
Russia considers itself to be in a much stronger position today than in 2014 when the US imposed sanctions over its involvement in Crimea. After briefly talking about a so-called Asia-pivot in 2014-15, the strategy now is one of diversification in relations, both trade and political. It isn’t considered a first-tier priority.
Other programs, like the Alternative Fuel Rebate for consumers and the Alternative Fuel Incentive Grants, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and made electric cars more accessible to Pennsylvania drivers. As impressive as all this work has been, it cannot only be for some Pennsylvanians — it must be for all. Why Does It Matter?
First proposed in 2014, the 780-mile transmission line is intended to transport electricity generated by wind turbines in Kansas to customers in Indiana, passing through Missouri and Illinois along the way. greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.
