Last week, I joined my colleagues at COP28 in Dubai , as negotiators and civil society push for a fossil fuel phaseout to meet climate goals. We know that fossil fuels are causing the climate crisis. And we know that to avoid more climate destruction, the world must stop digging up and burning fossil fuels. Wind and solar power, paired with energy storage and energy savings, can almost entirely replace fossil fuels – and leave our communities better off.

Under the LCFS each fuel pathway gets a unique carbon intensity (CI) based on a lifecycle analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and use of the fuel. The CI of an electric vehicle charged with solar power is zero, and most of the biofuels fall somewhere in the middle [i].

These higher costs are being driven by a major overreliance on natural gas, which has sharply spiked in price and is currently the dominant fuel source in the US for both home heating and electricity generation. These claims just add to the deluge of greenwashing and disinformation from the fossil fuel industry.
