It was in Alaska that I began thinking more deeply about my connection to the land and the ocean and my responsibilities in stewarding the places that nurture and support us. But there are also many instances of effective incorporation of the two.

Watching the sawfish in the aquarium also made me sad—as it houses some of the most endangered ocean animals in the world, the aquarium is one of the last places we will be able to catch a glimpse of them. In the toolbox of ocean animals, sawfish and hammerhead sharks are indeed related. All sawfish are endangered.
