By Penn State News Last spring, at the request of President Eric Barron, a team of more than 20 faculty members, staff members and students began to formulate a plan to address climate change, one of the most complex and urgent issues of our time, by significantly lowering the University’s greenhouse gas emissions on all its campuses.

Scope 4 greenhouse gas emissions are not new. They date to 2013 when the Greenhouse Gas Protocol identified “avoided emissions” as emission reductions that occur outside of a product’s lifecycle or value chain, but as a result of the use of that product.

Efficiency programs are the best and cheapest way to reduce carbon emissions because they both lower energy costs and carbon emissions.

Utilizing manure nutrients efficiently means that risk of loss of nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, and greenhouse gas is minimized. Manure Expo combines 1) Educational Sessions, 2) Technology Demonstrations, and 3) an Industry Trade Show. The project is reducing emissions and Phoenix Contact’s carbon footprint.

As the state moves toward all-electric buildings, replacing older gas-powered furnaces and air conditioning units with heat pumps can reduce carbon emissions and indoor air pollution while increasing efficiency, comfort and resiliency, especially as extreme heat events increase. This is not only a California issue.
