These changes, if adopted, will allow more gas plants to burn more gas further into the future. We urge the government to strengthen the regulations, rather than weaken them. Clean electricity is an absolutely crucial element of a credible climate strategy. The government must finalize the regulations without further delay.

In late December, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released proposed regulations for the Section 45V Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. Finding careful resolution to these issues will be a key point of focus over the comment period for these regulations, which is set to run through February 26 th , 2024.

The OEB is Ontario’s independent regulator of the electricity and natural gas sectors. On December 21, 2023, the OEB decided not to continue a $250 million a year government payment that Enbridge had requested in its rate application for 2024-2028. Heat pumps, which run on electricity, are now cheaper than gas furnaces.
