The history of these pollution standards is quite distinctive. Tier 3 standards were phased in starting with 2017 cars.

The Obama Administration set the first vehicle GHG emissions standards in 2010 for vehicles manufactured in model years 2012 through 2016, and set revised standards in 2012 for model years 2017 through 2025.
