The history of these pollution standards is quite distinctive. Tier 3 standards were phased in starting with 2017 cars.

Since then, EPA has consistently regulated GHG emissions from motor vehicles, although the scope of EPA’s GHG emissions regulations has been the subject of a political tug-of-war. These standards required each automobile manufacturer to reduce the average emissions from its vehicle fleet by approximately 5% per year between 2012 and 2025.
