The shift from fossil fuels in the 100-percent RES scenario reduces the amount of toxic power plant air pollution much more than what we called a “no-new-policy,” or business-as-usual, scenario. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants in alliance states drop 88 percent and 77 percent respectively by 2040.

For over a third of that time, the executive branch prioritized fossil fuels and did its best to block efforts to cut emissions. If the US had shaved even a single percent off its emissions each year from 1992 to 2008, our emissions would have grown less than 9% instead of 25% over the whole time period.

The price of urea also surpassed its previous recorded spike in 2008 by approximately 18 percent. Geopolitical considerations aside, our current agricultural model is not climate friendly, and the production and use of fertilizers contribute significantly to both carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and non-CO 2 heat-trapping emissions.

Burning coal in these two regions account for a little under two gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, with 1.29 Burning coal emits twice as much carbon dioxide as natural gas and up to 50 times more than solar and wind in their entire lifecycles (manufacturing and recycling included). A moral imperative.
