Wider repercussions, including the inequitable impacts of rising food and energy prices and the potential for a food crisis hitting vulnerable populations around the world, must also be urgently addressed by global leaders. Other countries are dependent upon these fossil fuels, they don’t make themselves free of them.

Our national overreliance on gas is evidently undermining energy access, not strengthening it, as some fossil fuel industry players would want you to believe. Likewise, pipeline giant Williams Companies now refers to its gas projects as “clean energy” projects. Don’t believe the industry spin.

Far more energy efficient than a gas furnace, using a heat pump can provide significant energy bill savings , while offering protection from volatile gas prices , which can fluctuate wildly depending on global markets. Gas is made mostly of methane – a climate-damaging fossil fuel that is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

A recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study shows that it would take less than 1 percent of the land in the Lower 48—that’s an area comparable to or even smaller than the fossil fuel industry’s current footprint. Rooftop solar deployment, meanwhile, doesn’t require any land. times current levels by 2035.
