Thats why I believe the Climate Accountability Act is a critical step for Wisconsin, especially given all the ways the federal government is trying to move us backward on addressing climate change. the federal government is trying to move us backwards on addressing climate change. Madison is our home.
A target of 45 to 50 per cent reductions from 2005 levels by 2035 represents no meaningful increase in ambition from Canadas current 2030 target. A target of 45 to 50 per cent reductions from 2005 levels by 2035 represents no meaningful increase in ambition from Canadas current 2030 target. Provincial governments share the blame.
Statement from Aly Hyder Ali, Oil and Gas Program Manager, Environmental Defence Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – We welcome the Government of Canada’s Oil and Gas Greenhouse Gas Pollution Cap draft regulation, which aims to curb pollution from the oil and gas industry.
Even so, it compares favorably with the national governments in places like the U.S. According to the Energy Information Agency , South Korea’s power sector is heavily reliant on fossilfuels. Actual generation is tilted a bit more toward fossilfuels and nuclear. What is South Korea doing to cut its emissions?
The pledge is a voluntary agreement to reduce global methane emissions by 30 percent below 2020 levels by 2030; however, methane levels keep going up and we are woefully off track for meeting this goal. Corporate high emitters When a methane super-emitter is identified, the company or government who owns that site needs to take action.
The pledge is a voluntary agreement to reduce global methane emissions by 30 percent below 2020 levels by 2030. But governments must put policy measures into place immediately to be effective. Methane emissions come from two main sources : fossilfuels and agriculture—primarily animal-based agriculture. degrees C by 2100.
First and foremost, despite some fossilfuel interests swinging for the fossilfuel-favored fences, the Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. What the Supreme Court decided in West Virginia v. What this decision means for the climate. That’s for two reasons.
Tricky math on heat-trapping emissions The report reiterates ExxonMobil’s 2030 emissions reduction targets, the headliner being a 20-30% reduction in corporate-wide intensity. Heat-trapping emissions must be cut in half by 2030 to reach the Paris agreement goal of keeping global warming to 1.5 billion per year.
To deliver on this goal, the federal government made important investments in renewable energy projects. Yet, reaching net zero also means phasing out polluting fossilfuel energy, so the government developed rules to impose a pollution limit on electricity producers. Canada formally adopted this goal.
This new research found that ExxonMobil’s climate projections from its internally developed models accurately projected the temperature rise that has happened since then and that its calculations were in line with independent research produced at the time by academic and government scientists. Let’s dig into what Supran et al.’s
Last week, the federal government showed some much-needed climate leadership at COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. Joining an ever growing list of countries from around the world, Canada pledged to end public financing for overseas fossil-fuel projects in 2022 and instead prioritize the clean energy transition.
Two-thirds of the G20’s public finance for energy went to fossilfuels in 2019–2020. The G20 group of nations provided nearly US$200 billion in support of fossilfuels in 2021, despite the worsening impacts of the climate crisis and their pledge in 2009 to phase out “inefficient” subsidies. By Catherine Early.
Overly focusing on technological innovation will miss the basic changes needed to drive the clean energy transition at scale and at pace today, including required breakthroughs on collaboration, collective action, communication, governance, and business model reforms. to 80 percent of electricity from zero-carbon resources by 2030.
But given the growth of the economy, carbon emissions were projected to continuing growing steadily through 2030. In November 2021, Prime Minster Modi announced in Glasgow that India would get half its energy from renewables by 2030 as well as significantly cutting its emissions. As in the U.S.,
Texas and a number of other states have passed laws banning what they call “boycotts of fossilfuel companies.” ” More precisely, they ban state investment or contracting with firms that “boycott” fossilfuel companies. That’s generally — but not always — going to be firms “utilizing” fossilfuels.
Luckily, governments have many options that they can use to make polluters pay their fair share. The next federal government must make polluters pay for the harm theyve done to people and the planet. End FossilFuel Subsidies In 2024, the Government of Canada provided nearly $30 billion to the fossilfuel and petrochemical industries.
Australia has had a change of government. The Liberal Party — conservative in everything but name — lost control of the federal government to Labor. So the change in government is more than welcome. Labor’s climate policy calls for a 43% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. Coal exports are 3.5% of total GDP.
Canada needs to take more action to transition away from fossilfuels Statement from Aly Hyder Ali, Oil and Gas Program Manager Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – We applaud today’s report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which sends a clear signal: the era of fossilfuels is ending.
Statement by Stephen Legault, Senior Manager, Alberta Energy Transition The Alberta governments 2025 budget threatens the future economic prosperity of the province by failing to take action to transition from a fossilfuel based economy to a renewable energy economy.
billion of hydropower investments by 2030. By Fermín Koop New government plan says US$86 billion of spending needed to boost energy transition – while backing natural gas too. The transition away from fossilfuels has, however, been an elusive goal for Argentina to date. The Agua del Toro dam in Mendoza, Argentina.
PJM directs the revenues and operation of the largest fossilfuel power plant fleet (124 gigawatts), making it the largest utility in the US. To protect its markets, PJM’s governance , their way of doing business in other words, is hostile to the involvement of state governments and state policies.
Unless the government adopts a similarly holistic perspective when implementing the tax credit, though, the incentive could wind up doing more harm than good. The framing is consequential. In reality, though, when we factor in impacts across the energy system as a whole, that “clean” hydrogen could be increasing emissions overall.
Statement by Stephen Legault, Senior Manager, Alberta Energy Transition The Alberta governments 2025 budget threatens the future economic prosperity of the province by failing to take action to transition from a fossilfuel based economy to a renewable energy economy.
Upcoming research from my colleague Dave Cooke shows that electric delivery trucks can reduce climate-warming emissions from driving by up to 92 percent and reduce lifecycle public health impacts by up to 85 percent compared to today’s average fossil-fueled delivery trucks. on routes between 250 and 450 miles.
, its district, appellate , and supreme courts decided in favor of Urgenda, an upstart environmental organization, ordering the government to more aggressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, Shell has the most ambitious emissions abatement plan of all fossilfuel companies , for whatever that is worth.)
Germany that the federal government must adopt an immediate action program (‘Sofortprogramm’) under the Federal Climate Change Act (CCA). The program is intended to ensure compliance with the annual emission targets for the building and transportation sectors for the years 2024 to 2030.
California’s LCFS is causing problems for other states and the federal government. The LCFS is designed to hold fuel producers accountable for their supply chain emissions The LCFS and related Clean Fuel Standard policies are performance standards for transportation fuel based on lifecycle analysis.
By Anders Lorenzen The UK government has again come under criticism for it’s climate commitments as they earlier this week gave the go-ahead to the controversial Rosebank oil field in the North Sea. It is argued by Equinor and the UK government that by electrifying the extraction process it becomes less emissions-intensive.
2025 The theme “Our Power, Our Planet” calls for tripling renewable energy by 2030. Reduce the dependency on fossilfuels It urges governments, companies, and individuals to reduce fossilfuel dependency and scale up sustainable alternatives. 1990 Earth Day expanded globally to 141 countries.
Environmental Defence has partnered with more than 50 environmental groups to call on the federal government to end plastic pollution. We need the government to put its full attention, resources and regulatory power to work to reverse the crisis that is overwhelming the world’s oceans and natural habitats. It also makes no sense.
I dug into this complexity with my energy colleagues in the context of their recent analysis of pathways for how the US can meet its goals to cut heat-trapping emissions 50%-52% below 2005 levels by 2030, and achieve net zero emissions no later than 2050. That analysis assumed the U.S.
Last November, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released an interdisciplinary study exploring the various pathways to meeting US goals to cut heat-trapping emissions economywide 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions no later than 2050. The good news?
Deep Branch, a UK company which is pioneering a promising UK carbon capture project has received significant UK government funding. The company is planning multiple additional Proton production facilities, with an anticipated 600,000 tonnes per annum global capacity by 2030, utilising over one million tonnes of CO2 annually.
There’s a direct line of culpability between fossilfuel corporations and climate change – it’s why so many oil and gas CEOs have topped our list of Climate Villains. But they aren’t the only powerful players who shoulder responsibility for keeping us hooked on fossilfuels, the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
The current rules require a 20 percent reduction in the CI of transportation fuels by 2030, which the proposed amendments would change to 30 percent in 2030 and 90 percent in 2045. Getting this right is important, both for California and to ensure the LCFS remains a workable model for other states and the federal government.
They suggest the only thing that will lead to enough of a change of direction would be an unmistakable signal of ambition and action when governments meet in Glasgow in a few weeks time. It further explores what the pledges to reduce emissions made by governments so far mean for the energy sector and the climate. More ambition needed.
Phase-out all non-recyclable plastics by 2030 and ensure all new plastic products and packaging manufactured and sold in Canada are mechanically recyclable in an environmentally safe manner. It wants government handouts to pay for experimental projects to burn plastic or turn it into fuel. We need a plan that won’t : 5.
Last week, the International Energy Agency warned governments against relying on the carbon capture plans of oil and gas companies, calling these a fantasy. This isn’t just a bad bet for the climate, it’s bad for Albertans. Of course, this should come as no surprise from a province that put a moratorium on renewable energy development.
The Pittsburgh 2030 District , a project of the Green Building Alliance , has released its 2022 Progress Report , revealing District property partners have reduced carbon emissions by 44.8% This achievement moves the District within range of reaching its target goal of 50-65% reduction in carbon emissions before the 2030 deadline.
By expanding renewable power, phasing out fossilfuels, electrifying as much of the economy as possible, and deploying other technologies, the U.S. But it requires ambitious policies, including nearly tripling renewable energy’s share of US electricity generation by 2030 (see graph below).
Statement by Julia Levin, Associate Director, National Climate Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – New analysis released today from the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) demonstrates that the Government of Canada is still intent on providing massive subsidies to fossilfuel companies.
Statement from Julia Levin, Associate Director, National Climate Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – The Government of Alberta’s new Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan is not a credible climate strategy. It’s also missing key elements, such as a 2030 emissions target.
The Halton Hills Generating Station in Halton Hills, Ontario (Photo by Ian Willms) The “Clean Energy Advantage” In the budget, the government boasts about Ontario’s “clean energy advantage” even though it is actively whittling away at it. The current government acts like it’s somehow responsible for this feat.
With the growing urgency to address climate change, governments and companies are developing “net-zero” strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This decade is decisive – there needs to be strong interim targets (2026 and 2030) to ensure that we have a chance to get a handle on our emissions and create a climate-safe world.
