Last fall, Nissan announced that it plans to introduce cobalt-free batteries by 2028, while Tesla said it will shift to lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which do not contain cobalt or nickel, for its entry-level Model 3 and Model Y cars. A 2022 study in Environmental Science and Technology detected more than 20 volatile organic compounds, including hexane, toluene and benzene, in unburned stove gas. The standards, which will go into effect in 2028, will affect only 3 percent of gas stoves because 97 percent already meet them today.
