Germany decides to phase out nuclear power, complicating efforts to decarbonize the power sector. Government adopts a sector-by-sector plan to reach 2050 climate goals. The government proposes new measures to help meet the 2030 climate target, including 80% renewables by 2030. Renewables are 42% of electricity.

The aftermath of the nuclear phase out in Germany is becoming a never-ending story. It was initiated nine years ago, but now it comes back to haunt the German government with a vengeance. By that time the nuclear power plant in Krümmel had several safety issues and small-impact incidents were discovered.

The country wants to close the last nuclear power plant by 2022 and simultaneously phase-out coal by 2038 at latest. Now the government is pushing ahead with settling compensation - but not via a law but via a public law contract. All four remaining coal fired power plants in the country shall be phased out by 2030.
