Since its founding in 2017, the US Climate Alliance —a coalition of states committed to meeting the goals of the Paris climate accord—has grown to 24 states and one US territory. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants in alliance states drop 88 percent and 77 percent respectively by 2040.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, a 2017 PSE Healthy Energy study found that nearly half of California’s gas power plants are in communities that are among the state’s 25 percent most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Gas plants and infrastructure emit nitrogen oxides (NOx) during combustion, which degrade local air quality.

And Ontario is, well… Ontario really really likes so-called “natural” gas – a fossil fuel – and plans to use more of it to generate electricity. After greenhouse gas emissions from electricity dropped to a low of 4 Megatonnes, Ontario’s increasing use of fossil gas will lead emissions to rise to 18 Megatonnes.
