National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) : Set up by the EPA to determine standards for clean water (part of the Clean Water Act). It prohibits the discharge of polluting chemicals into US waters unless a special permit is granted. Title III of the Act created EPCRA (see above).
