In the US, almost every aspect of the environment is regulated - drinking water, surface water, air, hazardous waste, new construction, nuclear power plants, factories, and much more. There are many other elements to the Clean Air Act, such as the leaded gasoline phaseout, and in general air quality in the US is pretty good.
