Ontario is building new gas plants; the Feds need to step in now

Ontario recently announced it would contract new polluting gas plants to generate electricity for the province. This is outrageous, especially given that Ontario successfully phased out coal-fired power plants between 2005 and 2017 and brought down greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity sector by 93 per cent. Now, emissions from the production of electricity are set to soar by almost 400 per cent by 2030 and by more than 600 per cent by 2040 (compared to the 2017 level).

The USEPA Remediation General Permit that provided National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) coverage for site remediation discharge activities expired on April 8, 2022. Discharges that were authorized under this permit were administratively continued until issuance of the new permit. This new permit, which also incorporated dewatering activities, became effective on August 2, 2022 (August 31, 2022 in Massachusetts).
