Because of the way the climate and ocean systems respond to heat-trapping emissions, sea levels will continue to rise even after air temperatures stabilize. Research with climate models in recent years shows that when carbon dioxide emissions stop, the rise in atmospheric temperatures will likely also stop.
Climate models are the main tool climate scientists use to predict how Earth will respond to more heat-trapping pollutants in the atmosphere. Just by looking at the name, you can see that a GCM is a model that simulates the circulation of Earths different physical systems like the atmosphere and ocean. What causes a circulation?
Climate models are the main tool scientists use to assess how much the Earths temperature will change given an increase in fossil fuel pollutants in the atmosphere. The atmosphere around us is an invisible fluid (at least to the human eye): we can apply math to that fluid to predict how it will look in the future.
Both hurricanes were exacerbated by warmer ocean surface temperatures, and are examples of “what hurricanes will look more like in the future,” according to Dr. Marc Alessi, an atmospheric scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists. This bill was signed into law this September by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Last month, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released a report on a relatively new field of research – atmospheric methane removal. The Sabin Center contributed one of these papers on Legal Considerations for Atmospheric Methane Removal.
Whats the point of a beach adventure if you cant even go into the ocean? This is why the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s historic investments provided a long overdue federal commitment to improving and protecting water quality (and why current threats to it and the agencies like EPA administering funds are so misguided).
Our planet is undergoing significant changes due to climate disruption, with especially severe impacts on the ocean. CDR refers to deliberate human activities that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and durably store it in geologic, terrestrial, or ocean reservoirs or in long-lived products.
That’s because the parties to the London Convention and London Protocol are meeting from October 28 to November 1 in London to discuss, among other things, governance of ocean alkalinity enhancement and ocean sinking of biomass (e.g. Some are land-based, while others use the ocean. seaweed) for carbon storage.
Most significantly, the court held that—at least in principle—companies responsible for large-scale emissions can be held liable under German civil law for the climate-related harms they contribute to. In this post, we explain the facts and legal architecture of the case and some of the key highlights from the court’s judgment.
The one-year, paid fellowship is made possible by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Sea Grant College Program. Nathaniel says, “I have always been incredibly passionate about marine conservation and the interface of science and law in making positive change for our oceans.
It is also necessary to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (a process known as carbon dioxide removal or CDR). Alaska is thought to be an idea place for seaweed CDR projects, in part because local ocean conditions are well suited to growing seaweed, and also because the state has established processes for permitting seaweed farms.
Ocean-based CDR strategies, which aim to increase the oceans natural carbon sink capacity, are gaining attention. One such strategy, ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), involves adding alkaline substances to seawater so as to increase its ability to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and mitigate ocean acidification.
Achieving global climate goals will require rapid and dramatic greenhouse gas emissions reductions, along with the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Scientists have identified a number of land- and ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches. ocean waters. judge-made) law.
mCDR refers to ocean-based processes or techniques designed to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it for long periods of time in the ocean. One commonly discussed mCDR technique is ocean alkalinity enhancement , which involves adding alkaline substances to ocean waters. How is mCDR affected?
Additionally, the Supreme Court found that when considering whether an agency’s NEPA report complies with the law, reviewing courts should grant “substantial deference” to the agency. National Environmental Policy Act NEPA was signed into law on January 1, 1970.

However, the IACtHR went further in AO-32/25 , pushing the boundaries of international human rights law by articulating an expansive conception of the rights of Nature as implicit in, or linked to, the right to a healthy environment because of the vital importance of healthy ecosystems and biodiversity that “make life on the planet possible” (para.

As NASA explains , over most of the last 800,000 years, until humans started burning fossil fuels, atmospheric CO 2 concentrations basically never went below 180ppm and never went above 280ppm. In the last sixty years, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has grown 100 times faster than it did at the close of the last ice age.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is in the Trump administrations crosshairs. 2: Protecting endangered species NOAA is the US agency responsible for protecting endangered species found in US oceans (those living on land or rivers are covered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service).
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has tracked extreme weather and climate-related disasters, including hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, and floods. Nevertheless, fossil fuel industry proxies immediately filed lawsuits against the rule.

Transformative levels of capital investment to implement climate solutions were urgently needed even with Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law programs–many of which funded locally-led investments centering public participation in the energy transition–in place. The headwinds facing climate efforts in the U.S.
Accelerating sea level rise, ocean acidification and loss of major ice sheets also continue apace, with profound consequences for the planet. They clearly intend to use every means at their disposal (lawful or not) to roll back regulations to help address global warming pollution.

The news that started leaking last Friday is that the Trump administration wants to break up the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and essentially end NOAAs climate work by abolishing its primary research office and forcing the agency to instead help boost U.S. Trump wants to Make Weather a Mystery Again.
This is a long shot at best, but if it works would allow the Administration to eliminate environmental law with a stroke of the pen. Another agency, NOAA studies ocean and atmospheric systems, providing crucial information about climate change. The head of EPA plans to go much farther, however. This makes for a depressing list.
Here in Los Angeles, recent demonstrations against ICE have been largely peaceful and nothing like past face-offs with law enforcement, though you wouldn’t know it from the burning Waymos that some national media are playing on a loop.
