And fossil fuel power plants may not stick to their retirement schedules for a variety of reasons. In 2021 alone, the plants slated for retirement emitted more than 28,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NO x ), 32,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and 51 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), according to EIA data.

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, the United States voluntarily pledged to reduce its global warming emissions at least 50 percent below their 2005 levels by the end of this decade and reach net-zero emissions no later than 2050. It also will save US consumers money because they will spend less on fossil fuels.

More recently, another study showed it had to be done in OECD nations to comply with the Paris Agreement targets. It is worth remember that overall, air pollution accounts for 7 million deaths per year (WHO). Ending fossil fuels subsidies and divesting away from coal will put the final nails in the coffin.
