While industry tried to paint hydrogen combustion engines as a “bridge” technology to hydrogen fuel cells, their own presentations undermined that very point—instead, this path is a clear dead end. It’s obviously far better to simply avoid all those losses and use the electricity to power battery-electric trucks.

The Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule has the potential to significantly reduce climate-warming greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as well as harmful air pollutants like fine particulates (PM2.5) Moreover, CARB’s own research shows that this is both economically and technologically feasible.

Now that California has taken the lead and set a goal for all passenger vehicles sold in the state to be electric by 2035, the next logical step is electrifying medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. This is an integral step towards cleaning our air and reducing climate-warming emissions. There are more than 1.8 pollution from vehicles.

I recently wrote a (very wonky) paper about how giving credits to technology deployment in advance of the beginning of the rule in 2027 could pose a serious problem to the long-term effectiveness on the rule at driving the cleanest technology to market, but it’s worth summarizing here. The changes are designed to support a renewable energy grid, make buildings more energy efficient, support the use of electric vehicles, and reduce waste and stormwater runoff.
