Rich Janati, DEP Bureau of Radiation Protection, explained, “TENORM is mainly from fracking operations, a lot of it in Pennsylvania. Currently, many conventional oil and gas drilling operations dispose of their waste, including drill cuttings which often meet the definition of TENORM waste, right on the drilling site. Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration Told A Federal Court Sunoco Cannot Hide Risk Assessment Data For Its Mariner East 2 Pipeline

Sunoco redacted information about the maximum distance from the pipeline that would be impacted by "thermal radiation," i.e. an explosion. Sunoco had been using a 660 foot distance from either side of the pipeline, but PHMSA requested that be increased to 1,000 feet. Read more here.
