In 2021, an ExxonMobil lobbyist described API as a “ whipping boy ” that takes the heat for bad policy positions while allowing the oil and gas giant to appear reasonable. But these technologies are no substitute for sharp cuts in fossil fuels if we keep the goals of the Paris climate agreement within reach.
