Between 2018 and 2020 Trump’s EPA removed or decreased protection for wildlife by amending a number of different protections that were in place. The “Endangered Species Act” was changed to give more focus on economic considerations; including conducting economic assessments when deciding whether a species needed protection or not. .

The government has been operating under a series of stop-gap measures since October 2021 and Congress has not passed a full-year budget since December 2020. In December 2020, the Trump administration unexpectedly denied an Army Corps of Engineers permit to the mining project. These species are found in Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri.

The decision means that NSF opts not to rebuild the telescope dish at the Arecibo Observatory, which was destroyed in late 2020.
