Just how bad is fossil “natural” gas? Since its founding in 2017, the US Climate Alliance —a coalition of states committed to meeting the goals of the Paris climate accord—has grown to 24 states and one US territory. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from power plants in alliance states drop 88 percent and 77 percent respectively by 2040.

I got involved after the city filed reports and maps to support its claim that it was fulfilling the requirements of a historic 2017 settlement to find and replace Flint’s lead pipes. It is mainly methane, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat for the first 20 years after it is released.

That would of course include fossil gas, which consists of 85 to 90 percent methane, a significantly more potent heat-trapping gas than carbon dioxide. A 2022 study found that gas stoves leak methane, and more than three-quarters of the emissions occurred when the stoves were off.
