In honor of Global Wind Day , here’s a roundup of what we’re seeing and what we’ve been thinking—five facts about wind energy to keep in mind as you celebrate, or at least make note, on June 15. Wind power costs fell by half from 2008 to 2021. Rooftop solar costs in 2020 were a third of what they had been in 2010. In 2020, the cost of single-axis utility scale solar was only a fifth of what it was in 2010. Cheaper renewable energy attracts private investment and makes limits on fossil fuels more feasible.

In order to reduce emissions, we must phase out fossil fuels—oil, coal and gas—and move towards renewable energy and less plastic and petrochemical production since these products, so dangerous as ocean pollutants, are made from oil. By 2050 they could represent 20% of oil demand by 2050.

Some years ago, I began to feel the most important thing I could do was learn how to replace fossil fuel with renewable energy. For 30 years I have been an advocate for offshore wind development off New England’s coast and for the creation of institutions to support a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

And let’s not forget the many local benefits associated with wind energy development.

In its most severe appraisal of the loss of wind capacity, ERCOT expected 8% of wind power compared to capacity. We can see the same impact of variable energies in Germany.
