U-235 is the isotope that can be used to sustain a chain reaction leading to the production of nuclear power (at low enrichment levels) or to build a deliverable nuclear weapon (at higher enrichment). US intelligence assessments repeatedly confirmed that Iran abandoned its weapon program in 2003 and had not changed its mind.
