According to studies in 2018 and 2020 led by Patrick Gonzalez, who was the principal climate scientist for the National Park Service, a White House climate advisor, and a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the mean annual temperature of the parks has increased at double the US rate since 1895.

Fossil fuels are the root cause of climate change, of long-standing environmental injustices, and are also frequently connected to geopolitical strife and violent conflicts. According to the IPCC, global emissions must be cut in half by 2030 to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, and IEA research shows it can be done.

The plaintiffs alleged among other things that the defendants the two projects’ cumulative impacts on carbon emissions. A climate change-related argument rejected by the trial court—that sea level rise projections in the Plan were too high and not based on best available science—did not appear to have been before the appellate court.
