A 2021 report by California state agencies calls for an additional 16,900 megawatts (MW) of utility-scale solar and an additional 12,500 MW of customer solar by 2030, making up 61 percent of new clean electricity resources. Along with solar, storage and wind will see significant growth.
At that time, even the largest solar arrays in the world measured only in the hundreds of kilowatts, enough to generate the equivalent of the electricity needs of just a few tens of thousands of US households. I can distinctly remember how wacky it seemed when I first heard someone propose a one-megawatt (1000-kilowatt) solar array.
When you think of solarpower , California undoubtedly comes to mind. The state’s strong climate goals paired with abundant sunshine have helped California reach record rooftop and utility-scale solar buildout. Out of the 5,700 megawatts of installed community solar in the country, less than 1% of that is in California.
Chris Johnston is co-author of The Arrival of the Electric Car – An Overview of the EV Revolution Happening Now. The fastest way to shift the transportation sector to environmental sustainability is to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This makes EVs two to three times more efficient than gas-powered vehicles.
Specifically, it is important to understand that solar is not being sited in equal quantities on these three types of land, as farmland hosts far more solar projects (33%) than either grassland (6%) or forests (4%). For comparison, nearly 3% of solarpower is currently sited in urban areas. [1].
CARB’s use of the LCFS as a cash cow to fund manure digesters is bad transportation fuel policy and bad agricultural policy. A quick glance at the latest data from CARB shows there are three large and growing sources of credits: bio-based diesel, biomethane and electricity.
The installation of solar panels in Brazil is increasing amidst the water crisis. With fears of energy rationing and rising electricity bills, farmers and livestock breeders opt for sustainability and self-sufficiency. This brings with it the possibility of severe electricity rationing. The solarpower plant is one more.
