How Much Land Would it Require to Get Most of Our Electricity from Wind and Solar?

A recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study shows that it would take less than 1 percent of the land in the Lower 48—that’s an area comparable to or even smaller than the fossil fuel industry’s current footprint. NREL found that total US transmission capacity would have to increase by 1.3 times current levels by 2035.

Removing Barriers to Energy Storage is Key to a Clean Energy Future

A 2021 report by the US Department of Energy’s Solar Futures Study estimates that as much as 1,600 GW of storage could be available by 2050 in a decarbonized grid scenario if solar power ramps up to meet 45 percent of electricity demand as predicted. Currently only 4 percent of US electricity comes from solar.
