In the 1960s climate change was not really a significant concern, not even amongst environmentalists – this was despite the fact that the Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius in 1896 was the first to claim that emissions from fossil fuels might eventually result in enhanced global warming. Today that number is 420ppm and rising.

The greenhouse effect is a popular name for the earth’s warming effect which occurs naturally when gasses in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space. The rate of emissions growth year on year slowed between 2010-2019 in comparison to the previous decade. We Need to Act Now!

Coal power generation must be reduced to 80 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030 and be phased out before 2040 in order to meet targets set out by the Paris Agreement. .

Cop stands for conference of the parties under the UNFCCC, and the annual meetings have swung between fractious and soporific, interspersed with moments of high drama and the occasional triumph ( the Paris agreement in 2015 ) and disaster (Copenhagen in 2009). Why do we need a Cop – don’t we already have the Paris agreement?
