This is because of black carbon’s enhanced ability to absorb visible light; it actually absorbs nearly a million times more energy per unit mass than CO 2. Black carbon’s lifetime is on the order of days to a couple weeks, which is about 0.004% of the lifetime of other pollutants like CO 2 (which has a lifetime of 300 – 1000 years).
