A new cosmic dawn: peering across the universe with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope

Pegged for launch in 2007 at a cost of $1bn, in 2002 it was renamed the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) after the former NASA administrator. The JWST’s main exoplanet task will be to probe the atmospheres of these distant worlds as they pass between the telescope and their parent stars.
