The fossil fuel industry has systematically contaminated our environment with a wide range of toxic chemicals for over a century. Examples are benzene, hydrofluoric acid, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and many, many other toxic pollutants. Refining uses many risky industrial processes.
