Over multiple generations of CMIP models Arctic sea ice trend predictions have gone from much too stable to about right. Why? The diagnostics highlighted in our model-observations comparison page are currently all temperature based, and show overall that climate models have being doing well on these trends for decades. But there has been increasing attention to trends in non-temperature variables, and there, model performance is more mixed (Simpson et al., 2025).

DEP: XTO Energy Failed To Restore 5 Multi-Million Gallon Shale Gas Water Impoundments In Butler County

On May 20, the Department of Environmental Protection issued notices of violations to XTO Energy, Inc.-- an ExxonMobil Company-- for failing to restore five multi-million gallon shale gas water impoundments it used to support fracking operations in Butler County. The impoundments are required to be restored-- liners removed and the area regraded to the original contours-- within nine months of their last use.

Firm evidence of Majorana bound states in quantum dots has been reported by researchers in the Netherlands. Majorana modes appeared at both edges of a quantum dot chain when an energy gap suppressed them in the centre, and the experiment could allow researchers to investigate the unique properties of these particles in hitherto unprecedented detail.

On May 30, Gov. Josh Shapiro issued an update on what he said is the "fight to lower energy prices through PJM Reform and [his] Commonsense Lightning Plan." The Senate and House are scheduled to adjourn for the summer on June 30. As utility companies raise electricity prices as a result of last years PJM auction, Gov. Bloomberg: US DOE Orders 760 MW Eddystone Peaking Power Plant In Delaware County To Remain Open Due To The Energy ‘Emergency’ Declared By The President

On May 30, Bloomberg reported the US Department of Energy issued an order to require Constellation Energy Corp.s Eddystone Generating Station in Delaware County to remain open past its expected closure date of May 31, 2025. The order requires Units 3 and 4 of the plant to remain open through August 28, 2025 when the order expires. Eddystone is a peaking electricity generation facility with a capacity of 760 MW that burns either natural gas or oil, depending on market conditions.
