On August 9, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority announced it would be committing to the purchase of wind power and the use of clean energy to support the production and operations of water services. Acknowledging that the United States is a leading contributor to carbon emissions, the Biden administration has committed to cutting US emissions 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. This would require 1,400 to 10,100 miles of new high-capacity lines per year, assuming new construction began in 2026.

Let’s hope the members of the General Assembly rise to the occasion and provide some real conservation leadership this year by passing good bills. House Bill 1226 (Sturla-D- Lancaster) requires farms given preferential tax abatement under the state’s Clean and Green Program to have a conservation plan. Read more here.
