SB 605 (2014) took the first step in methane-specific policy, directing the state’s Air Resources Board to create “a comprehensive strategy to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants” such as agricultural methane.

All research is governed, mostly through normal processes of peer review, research-program management, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Scientific research is not conducted in an anarchy. Compared to these cases, claims that SG research could lead to harms rely on weaker and more indirect causal mechanisms.

In May, a California civil rights coalition filed a lawsuit against the state to prevent implementation of climate law aimed at reducing driving. The coalition calculates that the proposed law will increase the cost of a home by anywhere from $40,000 to $400,000.
