Most plastics are a by-product of petroleum refining, which make their presence a guarantee as long as we use fossilfuels. Some might say that we can recycle plastics into other products like building blocks, diesel etc However, is this form of recycling- also called chemical recycling- really sustainable?
And because roughly 60 percent of global textiles now contain plastic derived from fossilfuels, it is estimated that more than a third of the microplastics in the oceans today were shed from clothing. What about recycled materials made from plastics? Cotton agriculture alone uses 2.1 percent of the world’s arable land.
