The update came during the meeting of DCNR's Conservation and Natural Resources Council.
DCNR received notice of the grant termination on May 22. The only explanation was a statement in the notice saying, "This award no longer effectuates the priorities of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and is therefore terminated."
The grant was for the acquisition of five parcels of land and a trestle bridge within the City of Easton, currently held by the Belvidere and Lehigh River Railway.
The acquisitions would have included--
-- Connecting Downtown Easton with the Two Rivers Trailway through the new land and a pair of parcels owned by supportive municipalities;
-- Allow the City to preserve 19 acres of green space within a short walk of the City’s Downtown and;
-- Set the City up to pursue the second phase of rail corridor acquisition – five additional parcels owned by a separate entity – to create a new connection to the D&L National Historic Corridor at Hugh Moore Park.
Connecting downtown Easton to the D&L Trail has been an important priority for the City and is seen as a way to boost the City’s economy from restaurants, shopping and overnight stays. Read more here. Read more here.
